Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.

The tournament indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
