Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted during his visit to Washington that the Russian president's move to seek talks with the US president indicates Moscow is on the defensive. Zelenskyy commented, "We can already see that Russia is rushing to restart conversations as soon as it hears about cruise missiles." This statement addressed recent musings about supplying advanced weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Political Developments and International Reactions

A former US state department official, Dan Fried, commented, "Putin is trying to disrupt the momentum toward greater sanctions on Russia." He added, "We'll see tomorrow, but the chances of moving toward a truce by pushing Moscow to get serious seem to have diminished."

The situation came after the US president had in recent days been hardening his rhetoric toward Russia until Thursday's call with the Russian president, which the Russian government described as "extremely open and constructive."

European Energy Sanctions and Market Effects

EU authorities have set a mandate for fuel suppliers into the EU to prove their products are not sourced from Russian oil, according to a document released on recently. This step is part of the EU's upcoming ban on purchases of fuels made from Russian crude, which is included in its 18th sanctions package against Russia over its war in Ukraine.

Financial analysts noted that trading activity appeared to be considering the potential end of Indian imports of Russian oil. Some oil processors in India are getting ready to reduce purchases from Russia, with expectations of a phased decrease, according to insiders knowledgeable about the situation.

"This is a favorable turn for the crude oil price as it would remove a major customer of Russian crude," commented Tony Sycamore, adding that oil prices were stable on Thursday.

Military Situation and Infrastructure Attacks

A large-scale Moscow's drone and missile assault hit energy infrastructure in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, resulting in disruptions in multiple areas. Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces deployed numerous of drones and dozens of projectiles, along with aerial munitions.

"This autumn, the Russians use daily opportunities to strike at our power facilities," declared Ukraine's president, noting that strikes affected the areas of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, Sumy and western Ukraine.

International Diplomatic Responses

Ukraine's envoy to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, stated that Moscow demonstrated its real approach to peace through the "terror" of such strikes. "Russia yet again opted for weapons over talks, turning this assault into a clear blow to ongoing peace efforts," she said.

Meanwhile, the European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced that the European Union had no choice but to strengthen defensive systems against Russian threats. She revealed a "plan" to prepare for possible conflict by the end of the decade, including a new anti-drone system to be completely functional by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, called the "European drone defence initiative," is expected to begin working in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the following year. EU authorities aims to obtain the backing of EU leaders at a meeting in the coming days.
